Months of neuropathology, in a single 43-day mission.
Real spaceflight compels cancer cells to self-organise into 3D multicellular spheroids that recapitulate in-vivo tumour architecture — geometry, hypoxic gradients, ECM interactions and drug-penetration barriers 2D cultures miss.

Why it matters
2D cultures miss the tumour. Orbit rebuilds it.
Standard 2D cell cultures fail to replicate the 3D architecture, hypoxic gradients, ECM interactions and drug-penetration barriers of real tumours. Aboard the ISS, the absence of sedimentation and convection compels cancer cells to self-organise into multicellular spheroids that faithfully replicate in-vivo tumour structure.
These space-grown spheroids enable compound screening, metastasis modelling and mechanistic oncology research at a level of physiological fidelity no Earth-based model achieves — across breast, colorectal, pancreatic (KRAS), cancer stem cell, immuno-oncology and angiogenesis programmes.

Key spaceflight insights
What real spaceflight has shown.
01
Real spaceflight aboard the ISS consistently triggers multicellular spheroid formation in breast, thyroid, ovarian and lung cancer cell lines — independent of any ground-based simulation.
02
Space-flown thyroid cancer cells (FTC-133, CellBox-1/2 missions) developed large, well-organised 3D spheroids up to 5–10 mm — versus flat monolayers in matched ground controls.
03
ISS omics profiling revealed >2,800 significantly regulated transcripts spanning apoptosis, cytoskeletal remodelling, adhesion, angiogenesis and metastasis pathways.
04
Patient-derived TNBC organoids flown on Axiom Mission 1 underwent cancer stem cell reprogramming and enhanced therapy resistance — signatures not detectable in ground cultures.
05
ADAR1 was identified as a driver of malignant CSC regeneration in flight samples; ADAR1 inhibitors were subsequently tested in orbit on Axiom Mission 2.

Standardized 3D models
Ground-validated protocols; a terrestrial control run mirrors every flight.
2,000+ assays per mission
6×96 or 6×384-well plates, dispensed, treated and imaged autonomously.
Live data downlink
Brightfield, fluorescence and luminescence readouts throughout the mission.
